Our History
The Wimpole Clinic began as a specialist heart clinic back in 1975. Led by respected cardiologists Dr Scholes and Dr Croxon, the clinic focused on surgical precision, clinical governance, and long-term patient outcomes. And these are values we live and breathe even today.
Dr May joined the clinic as a junior doctor in 1981, when we were still operating from Hannah House in Marylebone (before moving to our current home on Harley Street in 2019). At this time, hair transplantation was still in its infancy, with the infamous hair plugs still being used as the dominant technique. These now-outdated techniques often left patients with unnatural results and poor aesthetic outcomes. This had to change — and it did.
The evolution of hair transplantation
Dr May began to refine alternative approaches to hair transplantation, exploring the strip surgery technique (also known as FUT). FUT involved removing a strip of skin from the donor area, then meticulously dissecting it into small follicular units. Implanting smaller grafts reduced the unnatural appearance of hair plugs, so surgeons could prioritise natural hairline design and follicle preservation.
This marked a major shift in the hair transplant landscape. Dr May — or Mickey May, as he’s affectionately known — became widely recognised for producing results that were far ahead of their time, attracting referrals from other clinics across the UK and internationally.
As a result of Dr May’s pioneering work, the Wimpole Clinic transitioned to become a full-time hair transplant clinic in the early 1990s. And as techniques evolved further, we adapted without compromising on our core principles. We introduced FUE — which is now the most popular hair transplant technique in the world — through senior surgeons including Dr Mir Malkani, who joined the team in 2012.
Dr May’s influence extends beyond clinical innovation. In the 1980s, he co-founded the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS) with Dr Farjo, establishing ethical guidelines, training standards, and peer collaboration in the UK.
Later, Dr May participated in regular meetings with other respected surgeons from around the world, in a forum that would later become the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
Dr May continues to strive for clinical excellence over professional self-promotion. As ever, his focus is on patient outcomes, peer mentorship, and surgical care — and as a clinic, we remain firmly committed to these values too.
Continuity of Care For Lifelong Hair Loss Management
Continuity of care is one of our defining features. Many members of our team have worked together for decades, contributing to a stable, deeply experienced clinical environment. Senior clinicians include Bilijana Djordevic, who joined the team in 1995, and Derek Bailey, who joined in 2014. And it’s also important to note the legacy of Linda Olsa, who sadly passed away in 2020. Linda joined the clinic as practice nurse and manager in 1975, and became the first UK nurse to perform hair transplant procedures under surgical supervision.
After five decades of continuous practice, we’re now the fourth oldest hair transplant clinic in the world. We’re true to our roots, and continue to be defined by our commitment to patient care. As surgical hair restoration continues to grow in popularity, our philosophy is the same: to achieve unrivalled results and prioritise patient wellbeing.
