It’s no secret that comedian Jimmy Carr has had a hair transplant. He isn’t the first celebrity to undergo this procedure, with David Beckham’s hair transplant and Elon Musk’s FUT transplant coming first. Carr has said he thought he resembled a ‘snooker-playing vampire’. The ‘vampire’ appearance is often connected to a widow’s peak, however, this is different from a receding hairline, which is what he was actually experiencing.

Jimmy Carr’s Hair Timeline
2000-2015
During Carr’s Distraction and 8 Out of 10 Cats days, we can see the beginning of a receding hairline. This is very common as 25% of men begin to experience some form of hair loss by the age of 21 [3].
The photo below shows Jimmy in 2015, where we can see a definitive amount of hair loss at his temples. This commonly occurs due to hormones such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which plays a significant role in the development of the receding hairline [4].

Jimmy Carr’s hair in 2019
In 2019, Jimmy Carr was rushed off his feet after releasing a DVD and a TV show. During this year, his hair had reached a definitive 3 on the Norwood Scale. The comedian’s hair had now receded into the ‘M’ shaped hairline, with the hair at the tip of his crown in a triangular shape. This type of hair loss is common in ageing men, as well as men who have genetically inherited the hairline.
As this was the year before his hair transplant procedure, the progress of his hair loss this year was most likely what prompted his decision to embrace hair transplant surgery.

When Carr revealed that he’d had a hair transplant in early 2020, his head had been shaved for the transplant, and the newly planted hair grafts were beginning to grow.
A year down the line, his new hair growth had come through perfectly, giving him a significantly more youthful look. In the first picture, we can see the difference in his hairline compared to the years before, as it looks a lot more straight whilst still appearing natural.
In 2021-2022, he decided to capture a completely new style for his blooming new hair, as he grew it out and dyed it a chestnut brown. There is no doubt that Carr’s hair transplant looks fantastic, and we hope that he feels as good as it looks.

The FUE hair transplant process involves using a micro-punch to remove individual hair follicles from the donor area, and transplanting them into the affected area.
The punch is usually around 0.6-0.8mm in diameter and does not leave noticeable scarring. This also means that you can wear your hair in any style, cropped or long, without visible hair transplant scars.
The procedure has a reduced recovery time compared to FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) which takes longer to heal and produces scarring. An FUE hair transplant also has a quicker growth time, meaning it is perfect for someone like Jimmy Carr, who is often in the spotlight.
How many hair grafts did Jimmy Carr need?
A graft is a tiny cluster of hair follicles, which is extracted from the donor area of the scalp in order to be transplanted to the affected area. A graft most often consists of 2-5 healthy follicles (follicular units).
During an FUE transplant, the grafts are retrieved with a micropunch, whereas during an FUT transplant, a strip of skin is removed from the donor area, which is then divided into individual hair grafts.
